10.11.12 Nottingham Games

The magnificent Nottingham Malaysian Games 2012!!

Did you ever go to NMG when you are studying in the UK?
No?? How dare you!!
It is the biggest Malaysian sports event in the UK!!
Most of the Malaysian great players, foods and performance were present in this event~

Well... HKMaS had organised a trip to NMG. Due to the long distance, we departed really early 5:30am to just to make sure that we could be there in time for the games. It was a shame though that we did not make it in time for the grand opening ceremony.

This time, we sent three different teams to participate in NMG, which is:
  • Batu Seremban: Lee Cheng Yie
  • Table Tennis: Ong Ru Shan
  • Netball: Susan Arleen Baskaran, Har Hor Kar, Preshana Kailainathan, Phei Ng, Nur Saliha Shastry Ali, Aida Adha Shastry Ali, Wong Su Li.
Tadah!! Our Netball Team!! Aza aza Fighting!!

What impressed me was, most of the sport teams were very professional. Some of them were even the state representative or Sukma players back home. That's why, watching the matches in NMG was awesome.

Besides, the Malaysian Food Festival was great and tempting. There were a lot of stalls selling a variety of Malaysian food such as nasi lemak, satay, nasi minyak, apam balik and so on. They were all very delicious!! Normally the meal price was around 4-5pound. Maybe it would be very expensive comparing to Malaysia Ringgit, but if you miss home so much, this doesn't cost you a lot per meal.

Not only food and games, there was also some performance. This was a performance of 24-style drum from the student of University of Liverpool. Wasn't that cool??

It was a very fruitful day for everyone of us. Food, matches and performance. We then left Nottingham at 6:30pm. Before leaving, we managed to take a group photo!!! Hurrays for NMG 2012 trip by HKMaS!!!

University of Sunderland dedicated players

We departed at 5:30am and reached at MeadowBank Sport Centre at 8:40am. After settling down the players, the participants all went to the different sessions respectively to cheer on their friends, while some others preferred to go to the city centre to experience the beautiful and historical city.

It had been a great day. Our sports player had did their best. Unfortunately, this year we did not win any gold...except BADMINTON MIXED DOUBLE!!! Sabina Lim and Jason Yong. They won a gold medal!!

Everyone was tired in the end. The bus departed from Edinburgh at 6:15pm. Due to some problem, we only arrived Sunderland safely 11:30pm. It was undeniably another great event.

HKMaS Mid-Autum Festival

Wow!! Wasn't that a fantastic evening!!??

On the 28 Sept 2012, HKMaS had organised the first ever Mid-Autumn festival in Sunderland, which aimed to bring all Malaysians, Hong Kongers and other chinese friends together to celebrate this festival. Although it was pretty rush as the committee only decided to have such an event three days before it but it was all worth it! The date of the Mid-Autumn festival is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, according to the Lunar calendar. It would a night of full moon.

We were really delighted to see around 40 participants who came to join our event on this day! We had Candy to introduce to us our society before the event started. .

The participants were then grouped into 5 different groups and they all had creative names:-
  1. Heptagon;
  2. Sailormoon;
  3. Nice-to-meet-you;
  4. Baby cream; and
  5. Whiskey
Our event started with a game led by Yvonne, called the "loop passing". Heptagon appeared to be the fastest in passing the loop and won themselves the best goodie bag for our next game, lantern making competition! The other groups had different goodie bags as well, making up of a varieties of materials for lantern making.

The participants were given 45mins to finish their handmade lanterns. The lanterns were marked according to their creativity, team work and originality. Candy and Calvin were the judges of the game. Every team was really enthusiastic and had their own unique ideas in making different creative looking lanterns. Everyone had a really good time!!!

Light refreshments were then served while the judges were making their decisions.

By looking at the pictures above, we could see that lots of efforts were being put into these awesome lanterns! And guess which three lanterns were being chosen by the judges? They were Heptagon's, Nice-to-meet-you's and Baby Cream's lanterns!!! The leaders were then being asked to promote their lanterns so everyone would vote for them in the final round.

After much competitions, the WINNER was....(drum rolls*....)....HEPTAGON!!! Congratulations again to them!!

The whole event ended successfully at 8:00pm. Everyone left with a big smile on their faces and all the committee members were glad that we held this event for everyone who had joined us today. Thank you again for those who had come today to join us because it would not have been a success without each of you.
