Hong Kong and Malaysia Society
General Notice #1
Committee 2010-2011
Date: 25 July 2010

Dear Members,

The end of another academic year is here and the start of another new year is about to take place. Since 2 years ago, when I, Adrian Ng and Chloe Chong founded this society in October 2008 we had never dreamt that HKMaS would be as largest Society of the University or as pro-active as it is today. We found ourselves fortunate to have been part of how this society grew from its mere beginnings to the best society of this University. Most importantly we feel honoured to have the opportunity to lead and work with a great committee to achieve unequivocal success, winning 4 of the highest University awards within this brief period of time. Together we have overcome difficulties, hardships and made countless sacrifices to achieve more for HKMaS and this University than anyone could have imagined. Unfortunately, I, Chloe and the majority are of the Committee 2009-2010 will be graduating this year. However, after all those chaotic and joyous times together HKMaS has given us one of the best University experiences we could ever have together. I hope that we all remain in contact with one another and I would like to wish everyone the best success in the future.

Once again I must congratulate our unquestionably committed and supportive HKMaS Committee 2009-2010 for their active participation in all society events. Special thanks to Jeannie Law, Felicia Tan, Cathy Wong, Jeffrey Soo, Leo Lee, Alison Chai, Deborah Quah, Jacquelyn Yeo, Steven Liew, Archer Au Yeung, Sarah Lim, Lily Tang, Hui Sing Yau, Vincent Liew, Jeremy Martin, Esther Sii, E Qian Tan, Li Pei Fong and Kah Hue Phang for their contributions as HKMaS Committee Members during 2008-2010. All of who have played a substantial role in building this society up from its foundations. Also special thanks to Ee Lian Tan and Kim Bong since 2008, Davin Wong and Winson Lee since 2009 for their continued involvement as committee members for 2010-2011. All contributions are greatly appreciated by HKMaS and the University!

The new committee for 2010-2011 was democratically elected during the Annual General Meeting on 23 April 2010. All new committee members under the new leadership of Mr. Collin Lu (President) and Mr. Astley Chong (Vice President) are expected to assume their active titles and duties starting from 1st August 2010. More details regarding the new committee can be found on our facebook and blog pages shortly.

If there is anyone else interested in becoming part of the prestigious HKMaS Committee, please contact anyone of the newly elected committee so that new posts can be arranged for the start of the upcoming academic year 2010-2011.

University Award Winner!

HKMaS has once again won 2 of the highest University Clubs & Society Awards for 2009-2010 straight for two consecutive years.

1. “The Club/Society that has achieved the most for its members”

2. “Recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Sport & Recreation”

Firstly, many thanks to all those members whom took the time to nominate us “HKMaS” as award winners. This success reflects this committee’s continued commitment and efforts to improve and exceed expectations in all aspects. Moreover, with the majority of the 2009-2010 Committee in final year, this year has been a very stressful for all of us. For us to further merit 2 of highest University awards again has been greatly rewarding for all the effort and time this committee has committed.

This year HKMaS has provided the widest variety of activities of any society of the University! We hope that this year has been particularly exciting year with something for everyone. Including a Welcome tour and Airport Pick-up for Fresher’s, HKMaS’s 1st Anniversary Party, Amazing Race around Sunderland, Chinese New Year Party, Hosted the North East Regional DotA Tournament, Sporting competitions and day trips to Nottingham, Manchester, Liverpool and continuous opportunities to integrate with other students at from Durham, Newcastle and Northumbria universities in for even more Events, Parties and even Political discussions by world leaders.

The HKMaS Committee 2009-2010 is very grateful to have the continuous support and participation all of our members at all of our events. Without your support, we would have missed out on all those fun events and memorable times which we all had together. Again we wish you continue to support HKMaS in the upcoming year for another spectacular year.

HKMaS Event – Topo Sunderland (19th December 2009, Saturday)

HKMaS organised Topo Sunderland, an amazing race style game with checkpoints, challenges and quizzes, but the interesting part was to get around Sunderland by following directions listed and using a compass!
Four team with 5 to 6 members respectively participated in the event – two teams from University of Sunderland and two teams from Northumbria University.

Comments:
“The “Topo Sunderland” experience was really fun. The games that were designed by the organizers were very interesting. Using the compass to find the stations was fantastic! There were 4 teams participated in this game. At the end, one of the Sunderland’s team won the first prizes. We enjoy the finger foods and drinks too. We also met a lot of new friends from Northumbria University through the game.
Lastly, thanks to event organizers for their meritorious effort for organizing such a great event! Hope that there will be more members participate in such events so that it will be more fun and exciting!”
- by Winson Lee

“I felt that it was a great that the event was held on the first day of the winter break. It was a good change for students to unwind from the stress build up after a whole term of assignments and exams. Plus, this event was organized predominantly for the fresher, giving them the opportunity to get-to-know Sunderland and its whereabouts better. It snowed, and the weather was freezing cold, but the participants and the organizers still showed a lot of passion and devotion to this event which touched my heart. There were six stations in total, in places distributed around Sunderland. All sorts of games and challenges had to be completed (and some punishments too, just to add a bit of “fun”) by each team to get clues to the next station. After almost five hours of walking around Sunderland, the participants enjoyed the refreshments prepared for them. The overall feedback was that everything was good; the only problem was to use the compass in the cold weather. Everyone is looking forward to the next event that is going to be held by HKMaS.”

HKMaS trip – Liverpool (14th November 2009, Saturday)

The Malaysian Society of the University of Liverpool invited us the annual sport games held by them. Although we didn’t have any participants for the games, we still made a trip there so that the members had a choice on whether they wanted to watch the games or visit around Liverpool town.
As a response to previous feedback from the Nottingham trip, we extended out day-trip time by departing from Sunderland earlier, which was 5:15am; the sky was still pitch-black when we departed.
We arrive in Liverpool approximately 9am, been dropped off by the bus at a parking bay somewhere near Albert Dock. From there on, we dispersed into little groups, visiting places of our own individual interest.

Comments:
“On the 14th November, I joined the Liverpool one-day trip which was organized by the HKMaS. Overall, I think it was a great trip for me and everyone else. All of us enjoyed and having fun during the trip despite the cold weather. Furthermore, the coach arrived on time to pick us up without any delay.”
- by Hui Sing YAU
“We arrived at Liverpool about 9am, and the first place my friends and I went was McDonalds to feed our hungry stomach. We then visited the Anglican Cathedral, which in my opinion, absolutely breath taking, and the stained glass were beautiful. We also visited the Metropolitan Cathedral which was uniquely different from most cathedrals in the UK. The group of us later adjourned to Liverpool One for late lunch and some shopping, but it ended up more of a window shopping rather than shopping. Ha ha….
Overall, the trip was good, it would have been even better if not for the rain which deterred me from walking around Liverpool’s China Town.”
- by Deborah Quah

HKMaS trip - Nottinghan Games (31st October 2009, Saturday)

HKMaS was invited by the Nottingham Malaysia Society to join their annual games, known as the Nottingham Games.

What is Nottingham Games?
Well, it’s an annual sports gathering organized by the Nottingham Malaysia Society, dubbed as the largest Malaysian student gathering overseas. It first started in 1985, and they celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2009. It’s recognized as “Best Event” by the University of Nottingham, with over 5000 participants from 56 universities in the UK taking part every year. The Nottingham Malaysia Society also organize the Malaysian Food Festival along with the games, whereby participants and visitors can have a taste of Malaysian food.
(info taken from: http://www.nms-uk.com/NMS/index.html)

What did the participants thought of the trip?
“Overall, the Nottingham Games experience was quite fun. Members who joined the trip were really happy with the food fair organized by the university as they missed the Malaysian food so much. Everyone really have fun participating in the games. Those who participated in the Badminton competition held play quite well too. They tried their best, showing the best sportsmanship though they did not win the competition.
Lastly, thanks to Jeannie Law for being a great trip leader for the day trip.”
- by Winson Lee

“Overall, the trip is nice and interesting. The bus driver didn’t know where the sports centre is and made us late for registration. In my opinion, trip was too short, sport players did not have sufficient time to visit the town after the games. I also think we need a tour leader/guide to lead us around town so that the trip will be more interesting.”
- by Jeffrey Soo
