HkMaS

Dear Members,

The end of the first academic year 2008-2009 for HKMaS has finally come. Undoubtedly, this society has exceeded expectations with endless success. Once again I must take the time to congratulate our highly devoted committee and all those whom volunteered. Special thanks to Mr. Kok Hong Chia, Mr. Ronald Vong, Mr. Martin Tam and Mr. Vincent Lee for their contributions as committee members during 2008-2009. I would like to wish them and all those whom are leaving Sunderland all the best in the future.

A new committee for 2009-2010 was democratically elected during the Annual General Meeting 2 on 29 April 2009. All new committee members under the continued leadership of Mr. Adrian Ng (President) and Ms. Chloe Chong (Vice President) are expected to assume their titles and duties from now on. More details regarding the new committee can be found on our facebook and blog pages.

I hope that we will be able to provide members with an extremely exciting and entertaining programme of events throughout the upcoming year. New members can be sure that our best efforts will made towards all society activities and events.

Hope to see you all soon!

Yours Faithfully,

Adrian Ng
President

CONGRADULATIONS HKMaS!

HKMaS has won two awards from the University of Sunderland Students’ Union “Recognition of Outstanding Achievements in Sport & Recreation” and “Individual whom has achieved the most for their Members”. This is a success which reflects the efforts of this committee and all those whom volunteered to help out during society events. Personally, I am speechless at their unquestionable commitment and support they have given one another. Together they overcame difficulties, hardships and made countless sacrifices to achieve more than anyone could have imagined. Also a massive thank you to all of our members for supporting and believing that we could provide you the best of what we could offer. Without your support HKMaS would not still be here today and now we are even more prepared for future years to come.

Your contributions are greatly appreciated!

UKEC Yarm & Hutton Rudby Trip (21 March 2009)

The trip didn’t turn out as expected but we were able to witness the horse race. Because of the time, we were forced to cancel the hiking to a walk back from the village fair to the village itself. Too be more optimistic, the view was not too bad with flowers, rivers, bridge, beautiful landscape and cosy houses by the roadside.

Everything went on smooth until we notice that we mistakenly read the wrong rail timetable. We were only left with 20 minutes to spare to travel to the train station which took up about 30 minutes on the outward trip. It was like a 2.4km marathon but we all made it in the nick of time. Congratulation everyone for your hard work, all our goals are made for today, we had our village fair experience, a hike of a lifetime (marathon), and taste of victory drench in sweat.

Manchester trip (21 February 2009)

It was my first visit to Manchester and thanks to the HKMas for organizing such a great one-day trip for us. We first arrived at the Sugden Sports Centre, where the sporting event organized by the University of Manchester was held. The HKMas did not participate in this sports event and I joined other members for a sight-seeing trip around the Manchester city. Manchester is well-known for being a city of sport. Our first destination was the City of Manchester Stadium, which is known as the largest club football ground in the United Kingdom. We spent about an hour there taking pictures around before we went to the next destination - Chinatown. Chinatown is one of the busiest and most colourful areas of city centre Manchester. When we reached Chinatown, it was about lunch time. Therefore, we decided to have ‘dim sum’ as our lunch at one of the famous Chinese restaurant. All of us enjoyed having our lunch there as the food is inexpensive with excellent quality. We managed to spend few hours shopping and taking photographs before the end of the trip. Overall, it was a great day trip and I think everyone enjoyed it.

- Hui Sing
Recruitment Officer

This trip has brought a closer relationship between the committee members and the members. It also enable each of us get to know new friends through the trip. We also get to know a footballer who made our society proud. Best of all, we get to eat so much delicious “dim sum” in China Town with such low price. We get to visit different tourist spots within Manchester Town. It would be better if we had a longer trip so that we can enjoy the shopping. Overall, I would like to thanks HKMAS for making an effort to make this trip a success.

– Jacquelyn Yeo
Deputy Press Officer

Chinese New Year Party (23 January 2009)

Overall I think the party went pretty well and the committee worked hard to put it all together :)
Job well done by the MC's who did a good job in entertaining the guests.
Food was tasty but maybe not quite sufficient for the entire crowd considering most of the committee missed out on the other dishes.
Possibly bigger tables in future so more of the guests can get a better view of the stage and the activities going on. I think most of the guests seated at the back were a bit out of place.
Atmosphere was nice and casual but as mentioned could have better stage lighting in future.

Good job and well done to all who contributed toward making the party a success :)
